Put simply, marketing involves telling the world how wonderful a product or service might be, and letting the target audience know why it needs to have that item in their lives. There are many ways to market something, of course, but as a general principle the message remains the same. If you therefore think, however, that working in the marketing sector is predictable, you’d be very wrong indeed.
There are so many advantages to a career in marketing, including:
This has long been a sector of industry that is going places; it attracts people who thrive on creativity, who love facing challenges, who savour opportunities to succeed and who specialise in vibrant communication. In the right environment, working in marketing can be wonderfully exciting, especially when you’re surrounded by like-minded individuals.
Marketing Jobs at all levels
There are industry-specific qualifications that can help you to progress, including those from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and of course having a good standard of general school and university qualifications will also prove beneficial. It’s also worth noting, however, that entry level posts are often available for the unqualified, and these can lead to courses and examinations later on. In some ways, the standard of your personality will be perhaps more important than the letters after your name.
It’s simplistic to say that those who work in marketing need to be able to persuade the rest of us to part with our money, although of course there’s an element of truth in that. This is only a part of the role, however, because you could easily be spending just as much time researching previous campaigns, analysing important data, understanding buying habits and spotting new trends in the market. Coming up with that all-important buzz-word to sell a product is only a small part of a much bigger picture.
Whether you’re persuading the public to switch their energy supplier, to book more holidays, to upgrade their phone contract or invest their life savings in a state of the art smart home, you’ll need to be the sort of person who gets a kick from the progress of a campaign from start to finish. If you’re an innovator, a communicator or a problem-solver, this could be the ideal career for you.
And you’ll be expected to reach out to the buying public via a number of channels of communication. Marketing campaigns are aimed at the consumer via TV, radio, print media, internet, text messaging, billboards, leaflets, YouTube videos and beyond. You’ll need to understand the channels, the consumers, the products, the messages, the strategies and more. For this reason as much as any, the chances are you’ll never work on two campaigns that are exactly the same. Variety really is the spice of life in marketing.
