The engineer will assess risk exposure, recommend loss prevention strategies, and support the development of insurance programs that protect plant assets and continuity of operations.

Job Description

  • Perform in-depth evaluations of Black Liquor Recovery Boiler (BLRB) plants, address key hazards such as smelt-water reactions and mechanical failures.
  • Review production processes, equipment reliability issues, and potential bottlenecks that could lead to safety or operational disruptions.
  • Design and customize insurance solutions aligned with the operational realities of the plant, particularly those involving BLRB systems and auxiliary equipment.
  • Partner with underwriters to structure coverage terms (e.g., All-Risks, Machinery Breakdown) and justify rating, limits, and conditions.
  • Maintain organized records of operational incidents, construction milestones, and inspection findings to support claims positioning and risk monitoring.
  • Conduct periodic on-site assessments, sometimes alongside senior risk engineers, to review BLRB maintenance practices and equipment condition.
  • Evaluate inspection logs, maintenance strategies, NDT testing results, and emergency response procedures relevant to BLRB integrity.
  • Assess potential business interruption scenarios linked to BLRB outages and overall mill downtime.
  • Regularly engage with site reliability, operations, and maintenance teams to understand plant constraints and co-develop mitigation plans.
  • Work with insurers to review asset valuations, maximum foreseeable loss levels, and premium adjustment mechanisms.

The Successful Applicant

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical/ Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in large industrial boiler systems and knowledge in associated risks.
  • Familiarity with risk management practices.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess complex technical scenarios.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and client engagement.
